Key Takeaways

  • Eligible creators can share Shorts Feed ad revenue after joining YPP and accepting the Shorts Monetization Module.
  • Shorts can be up to three minutes; the old 60-second limit is no longer a general rule.
  • Ordinary URLs in Shorts descriptions and comments are not clickable. Plan a working route to your review or offer.
  • YouTube has announced changes beginning February 1, 2027. Separate those future rules from the requirements that apply today.
  • Measure confirmed earnings and qualified referrals rather than treating views as guaranteed income.

How YouTube Shorts Monetization Works

Shorts Feed advertising uses a Creator Pool. Eligible creators receive an allocation based on their share of eligible engaged views in each country and keep 45% of that allocation. That is not 45% of every advertising dollar associated with a particular Short. See YouTube’s Shorts monetization policies.

A hypothetical revenue calculation

Suppose a Creator Pool allocation to your channel is $100. At a 45% creator share, the example payment is $45. This is arithmetic illustrating the share, not an earnings forecast or an estimate of revenue per thousand views. Your actual allocation may differ substantially.

Current eligibility and announced changes

As of this review, the standard ads entry routes are 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward the long-form watch-hour route. Meeting a threshold leads to a channel review, not automatic approval. Source: YPP eligibility.

Some countries offer earlier access to selected features through the expanded YPP. This is different from eligibility for Shorts ad revenue. Check the expanded YPP requirements and your Earn tab rather than treating all monetization features as having one threshold.

Announced for February 1, 2027: YouTube says new ads and Premium entrants will need 1,000 subscribers plus 8,000 qualified watch hours in 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in 90 days. Existing YPP status is not affected by that entry change. Monthly Shorts Creator Pool earnings will require 10 million qualified Shorts views in the preceding 90 days. YouTube also sets January 31, 2027 as the deadline for reviewing and accepting updated monetization terms. Read YouTube’s announced YPP changes for the full conditions.

Music and copyright

Music licensing contributes to how YouTube forms the Creator Pool, but YouTube says music use does not change a creator’s allocation or the 45% revenue-share rate. Do not assume replacing music guarantees higher earnings. Copyright claims, rights, and video eligibility are separate considerations; check each upload’s restrictions in Studio.

YouTube supports square or vertical Shorts up to three minutes. Music and claimed-content rules depend on the upload and its rights status. Follow the three-minute Shorts guidance before choosing music, especially for videos longer than one minute.

How to Use Shorts for Affiliate Marketing

Choose a narrow problem your audience needs to solve. A useful Short can demonstrate one step or explain one product limitation, then direct interested viewers to a fuller review. Commissions still depend on qualifying purchases, program rules, attribution, and refunds.

Build a working path to your review

YouTube lists ordinary URLs in Shorts descriptions and comments as non-clickable. Channel profile links and related-video links in Shorts are clickable. External links in long-form descriptions require access to advanced features. Source: YouTube’s link-sharing guidance.

  • Publish a useful review or tutorial that explains who the product suits, what you verified, and its limitations.
  • Choose a channel profile link or a relevant companion video as the next step. Use a destination that actually answers the question raised by the Short.
  • Make the spoken or on-screen call to action match that route: “Open the review through my channel profile” or “Watch the related tutorial.”
  • Disclose the affiliate relationship clearly in the recommendation and at the destination. Do not imply firsthand testing when the review is based on research.
  • Test the path on a phone, from the Short through the destination, before counting it as ready.

Use our trustworthy affiliate review workflow to prepare the destination and our AI content repurposing guide to turn one article into focused video ideas.

Illustrative example: one article, three useful Shorts

Imagine you have a tutorial about exporting captions from an editing tool. This is a planning example, not a tested campaign or a claim about a particular product.

  • Short 1: explain the difference between captions burned into a video and a separate subtitle file. Direct viewers to the tutorial for the export steps.
  • Short 2: show one verified step using your own recording. Include the tool version and avoid showing a generated interface as if it were real.
  • Short 3: explain a limitation or a situation where the tool is a poor fit. Send viewers to the review for the evidence and alternatives.

Each Short should resolve a small question on its own. The fuller review earns the next click by offering details that do not fit into that demonstration.

Other Revenue Routes to Evaluate

  • Sponsorships: agree on scope, usage rights, disclosures, and payment terms before producing a brand video. Audience size alone does not set a reliable sponsorship rate.
  • Your own products or services: demonstrate a real outcome or use case, and calculate margin after production, delivery, platform, and support costs.
  • Long-form content: create a companion tutorial when the topic needs more depth. Measure whether viewers follow the related-video path.
  • Fan funding and Shopping: check feature availability and eligibility in Studio. Do not assume every channel or country has the same options.

A Practical Shorts Measurement Plan

Start with a schedule you can maintain while checking every recommendation. There is no universal posting hour or weekly frequency that guarantees views or income.

  • Choose one audience, one problem, and one next step for the first batch.
  • Record the topic, publish date, call to action, destination, and production time for each Short.
  • Track relevant Studio metrics and destination visits separately. If your affiliate platform supports tracking labels, use a consistent label for this campaign.
  • Record approved commissions after adjustments. Keep tool and production costs alongside revenue.
  • Review a batch over comparable periods. Small samples, delayed conversions, and attribution gaps can make a result inconclusive.
  • Keep the useful parts, change one weak step, and test again instead of inventing a success story from views alone.

For a simple starting project, follow the 30-day first affiliate sale plan. Use the affiliate performance guide to distinguish traffic, clicks, and confirmed commissions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much will my Shorts earn?

There is no dependable fixed payout you can apply to every thousand views. Use your own revenue reports once eligible, and treat hypothetical calculations as examples rather than forecasts. A channel can attract views without earning a commission.

Can I earn affiliate commissions before joining YPP?

YPP ad sharing and an independent affiliate program are different arrangements. An affiliate program may allow promotion before your channel qualifies for ads, but you must satisfy that program’s rules and YouTube’s applicable policies. Approval and sales are not guaranteed.

Can I repurpose videos from another platform?

Use content you own or have permission to use. Reuploading someone else’s video or removing its watermark does not make it original. Add real instructional value, check copyright and monetization policies, and adapt the call to action to a clickable YouTube path.

Should I make every Short three minutes long?

Use the shortest length that explains the chosen point well. Three minutes is an available format, not a target. Check whether the longer version adds useful evidence or merely repeats the same idea.
